Default The case of the once-transparent WinXP pulldown menus

Does anyone have advice for me as to the cause & resoloution
of these missing menus?

a. Weekly I auto-update McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0.0 anti-virus
software (current DAT 4297 October 8, 2003, 4.2.60 scan engine).

b. About once a month I upgrade my WindowsXP PC with the latest
patches for all products as provided by MS at their web page:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

c. Yet, this week, after updating, almost all my pop-up & pull-down
menus became once transparent (basically they dissapear).

When I right click, or left click on a menu bar item, just the
right & bottom shadow of the pop up or pull down box appears;
but without any menu text whatsoever. The menu appears blank!

Then, as I scroll down, the menu text appears & remains until
that popup or pulldown is closed or a menu item is selected.
Yet, the very next pulldown has the same transparency problem.
This started happening today (I've had the PC for about a year).

Interestingly, the pulldown menus do not dissapear in some
applications, e.g., in Netscape 7.02, the pop up and pull down
menus do not dissappear. But, they dissapear in Eudora 6.0,
Internet Explorer 6.0, and even in Windows XP itself for the
Microsoft native file explorer pulldown menus.

The tray at the bottom right of the Windows XP interface is
also acting wierd (hard to describe). Basically it doesn't
show what's really running and only shows you for a second,
and then goes away.

Does anyone have advice for me as to the cause & resoloution
of these missing menus & flaky sytem tray?

My patch level is 100% up to date as per the Microsoft site.
The last patches installed (in reverse order) were:
Saturday, October 11, 2003
Intel network software update released on September 17 2003. Web site

Monday, October 06, 2003 IBM system software update released on
July 03 2003. Web site

Monday, October 06, 2003 Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1
(KB822603) Web site

Monday, October 06, 2003 Security Update for Windows Media Player
(KB828026) Automatic update

Monday, October 06, 2003 October 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB828750) Automatic update

Thursday, September 11, 2003 Security Update for Windows XP (KB824146)
Automatic update

Thursday, September 04, 2003 Security Update for Microsoft Windows
(KB824105) Automatic update

My question:
Does anyone have advice for me as to the cause & resoloution
of these missing menus?
