Hi
I'd really appreciate some input from the group. I'm using NTbackup under WinXT Pro to backup up files to an 'archive' disks. All disks are NTFS. Every backup begins with this error: > Backup Status > Operation: Backup > Active backup destination: File > Media name: "xyz.bkf created 09-Oct-03 at 16:04" > > Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure > > Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode. VSSAdmin yields the following: > C:\>vssadmin list shadows > vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool > (C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp. > > No shadow copies present in the system. > > C:\>vssadmin list writers > vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool > (C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp. > > Error: 0x8000ffff > > C:\>vssadmin list providers > vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool > (C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp. > > Provider name: 'MS Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' > Provider type: System > Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} > Version: 1.0.0.7 Under Services, both the MS Shadow Copy Provider and the Volume Shadow Copy are in status 'started' with a startup Type of 'manual'. Any thoughts or pointers on where to go next to get the volume shadow copy to work would be appreciated. Cheers Den |

Hi Den,
Questions: - Are there any VSS/COM+ errors in the Application Event Log? - Also, does this problem reproduce each time you run NTBackup? Thanks, Adi P.S. Unfortunately, the 80040154 error means that COM+ was not installed
succesfully during Windows XP Setup. The only workaround I know is to repair your windows installation. Please see this link for more details. http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;823772 Thanks, Adi P.S. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
