Gary,
Have you tried adding the logon name of the Win98 user to your users on the XP box? I've not messed with it for a while but I think that is how I got it to work at a client's house. No password is used on the 98 machine so I just created a new user by that name in XP without a password. Let me know if this doesn't work. I will try to get a 98 machine set up and see if I can be of more help.
