Default XP logon problem

once i type my password in the logon screen
it hangs for about 5 seconds before loading my wallpaper
and thats about all it does. explorer.exe isnt activated
when i look in the task manager, this figures since my
start menu is nowhere to be found

i cant even load up a new task or application through the
task manager. could this have anything to do with my
registry.

the first time the problem arose saw a message from
windows saying that it has successfully revoered my
registry, press ok to coninue. this occured after i typed
in my password to logon, only that one time.

please HELLP!!
i really need it to be up and running ASAP
