How to remove a DLT drive in 2000 server.

I need to remove a DLT tape drive on a production server, in order to test it
on a replacement server. I can not afford to reboot the server, but I need
to unplug the device from the SCSI card.
If I disable the device, and turn off the drive, -- do my tests -- and plug
everything back in and turn the drive back on, and enable the drive again in
2000 server, will I still have to reboot the server.
Is there any way I can unplug the backup tape drive without rebooting?
Any help would be appreciated.

Never remove non-pluggable hardware from any bus-structure without
shutting down, at least not if you value the data on the system.

You may find that it works, that people say they've done it, and that
you can get away with it, but, if you can't afford to shut down the
server is it going to be any impact if you trash the controller that the
tape drive is connected too? How about if you short something out and
take down the server - any problems restoring the last backup?

I can not find artical 980C932F-AC19-4F14-84B6-6E65D5006C56. I have done a
search... but I have not found anything that is close to what you have said.

If you don't care about the idea/opinion of people that have been in the
field, why did you ask?

Go ahead, remove the device with power on the bus, without shutting down
the server, isn't that what you wanted someone to tell you? I would
never do it, not in a zillion years, but you didn't like the reason I
provided for not doing it.

Oh, in usenet it's proper to reply at the BOTTOM of a post, even MS
can't change that.

That article number has to do with the post here in this newsgroup. He did
not post that for you to search for, it has nothing to do with his answer to
your question.

I would highly recommended that you shutdown your server before
disconnecting tape drives. If that server is important enough that you don't
want to shut it down, you shouldn't be willing to mess it up by removing
hardware and then reattaching it while the server is running.
