encryption of files

I'm using windows xp home edition. I followed the
instructions for encrypting files. However, when I get to
the box that says encrypt contents, that line is blanked
out and I cannot place a check mark there. Any
suggestions?

The Encrypting File Systems (EFS) is not available on Windows XP Home
Edition.
If you require EFS you mist upgrade to Windows XP Professional.
(we are aware that the common Help File may imply that EFS is available on
Home Edition)

If upgrade to WinXP pro is an issue and you are comfortable with programming
then you can use DPAPI (CryptProtectData/CryptUnprotectData) to whip up a
simple tool that will allow you to encrypt your files on XP home edition.
But if you do decide to use DPAPI then do make sure to create password reset
disk that can be used to recover your DPAPI protected data in case you
forget your password.
