Exclamation General Protection Fault?

i just got the orignal Unreal for PC and when i try to access the the advance graphics tab or change resoultion (to a whopping 800x600!) the game boots me out and says "general protection fault" what does that mean?
Also the game really slows down on my computer when there are "smoke effects" like rocket smoke or something... i dont get it!

Turn off any programs running in the background ... get the latest patches ... use the latest drivers ...
