avi files crash explorer

Hello. I've got a problem that's just started out of the blue. (no pun) and
I can't find any reference to it on Google.
Basically whenever I open a folder using Windows Explorer that contains an
avi video file Explorer crashes with the error

The instruction at "0xxxxx3397" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "written".

This always happens and the last 4 digits of the first number are ALWAYS
3397 and the second number is always 0x00000000". I've not installed any new
programs and I'm pretty much at a loss.
Can anyone shed some light on this. I'm running XP home.

Do you have Windows Media player as your default AVI player? Is this
happening on every one of your AVI files, or just certain ones?

One thing that may be occurring is a driver conflict with your video display
card. You may want to make sure all your drivers are updated and current
and see if that resolves your issue.

If you could try updating the drivers, and letting me know what your default
media player is, that would help greatly. Please let me know how it goes.

Here is some more information.
Windows Media Player 9 is the default player for avi files.
The crash occurs when the mouse hovers over the avi file in Explorer, just
before the popup appears giving you the file type,size, date created. This
is that small white box that appears next to the arrow when it's placed over
a file in Explorer. This popup doesn't appear when held over avi files and
instead explorer crashes.
It occurs on about 60% of avi files.
I've got an ATI Radeon graphics card and am using the official ATI catalyst
driver. Its not the very latest version but is only about a month or so old.
I've found 2 references to the exact same error using Google. But no good
responses were given.:-

The ati files that cause the crash are not corrupt and play fine in Media
Player. To play them I cant access them using explorer because they crash it
so I have to open Media Player then open them from there.

I have the exact same problem here.

When I position the mouse over *some* AVIs, File Explorer crashes with
that same message at address 0x03573397. Click OK and Windows does
some kind of mini reboot. I've had this happen before I reinstalled XP
Pro and now it's back.

My default AVI player is Media Player Classic by Gabest. I use this
one because it practically plays anything, even incomplete AVIs!
I rarely use Windows Media player, it just doesn't cut it.

Well, back to google to see if someone has an answer...

I don't think its got anything to do with right clicking and having the menu
appear. There is something of a pattern though. It always happens whenever
the explorer shell is started. Either when the computer first boots up, or
when the shell has to restart. But it then goes away after a while, for no
apparent reason.
A few other people have experienced the same thing. Could it be a hardware
fault - a problem with the RAM maybe?

ShellExView and disabled the 'avi proporties handler' and the problem went
away.
There are at least 5 instances of this propblem posted on the web and in
newsgroups so I hope this will solve it for others.
There seems to be a problem with the file shmedia.dll in XP SP2 on some
sytems and hopefully this will be looked into by Microsoft over time.

It did it for me too. Thanks a lot!

It was the 'avi proporties handler' for me.
Disabled it with with ShellExView. I'm gonna have a closer look to
that little proggy.

I just hope that Microsoft is watching.
