Default Best way to set up custom error pages?

What is the best way to set up a custom error page with
FP2003?

I keep reading that it's easy to do with a .htaccess file,
but that FP doesn't like that.

What is the recommended alternative?

Depends upon the type of server you're hosted on.
If it's Apache running UNIX do you have a webmasters Control Panel?? If so you can create /
designate the pages there and then edit them with FrontPage.
