By the way, thanks for answering my question about
streaming video. I have a few photographs on my home page (4 to be exact). I have made them as low quality files as I can without sacrificing too much. They are about 35KB each. I have DSL and even on my computer, the page takes 4 or 5 seconds to load. On slower computers, it's much worse. Is there anything else I can do? They are not photos that can be thumbnailed because they are part of the overall graphic look of the page. Thanks. |

Don't worry about it! That's not too bad and you sure don't want to ruin the
quality. Hi Kat,
there's always a trade off between image quality and download time. 4 pictures at 35k is 140kb, plus whatever else you have on the page, I'd say that size of page is going to lose a lot of traffic - especially among dialup users. By all means present larger content within your site but on your home page you normally have a couple of seconds to grab your users attention before they click elsewhere hit back or whatever - this would mean a max of about 30k. Can we see the pictures themselves? It may well be possible to optimise them further without too much loss of quality. Unless you're chasing a very specialised market I don't think a 140k home page is a good idea Jon Microsoft MVP - FP Kat wrote: > By the way, thanks for answering my question about > streaming video. > > I have a few photographs on my home page (4 to be > exact). depending on what the photos are of you may be able to use them in .gif
format with a low # color palate. they can't be too complex or colorful to get away with this. If you have a url you could get a good opinion if you could get the file size down without sacrificing the quality. some compression utilities are better than others. ;-) -- The email address on this posting is a "black hole".
