Default Hit Counter - Limit Recorded Hits

Is there a way to limit the number of times that a hit counter records page
loads?

The hit counter is recording the initial index page load, but also records a
hit when the page is again accessed from the navigation menu. I anticipate
a hit record on a page refresh, but not one when the navigation button is
used.

I feel certain that I'm doing something wrong.

Any help appreciated.

No, this is just how the hit counter works.
You'll notice though that if you use the
browser Back button the count doesn't increment
because the page is reloaded out of the browser cache files
instead of from the server.
