Conflict Between PC-cillin & AVG Anti Virus

Hi to everyone,

Running XP Pro on a stand alone computer at home.

Have been running AVG Anti Virus & PC-cillin for
appox 4 months together with no problem.
Of course they both upgrade themselves & download new
definitions without any help from me on a daily basis.
Yesterday AVG started for the first time to scan for
incoming email seemingly for no good reason every 2 or
3 minutes. Also as long as the E-mail Scanner part of
AVG is active, no incoming email comes in. It event-
ually comes up with the message that the server is down.
But when I disable the E-mail Scanner part of AVG,
everything is 100% fine.
I know that PC-cillin does a incoming and outgoing email
scan, but would be nice if both programs were working.

One of the two programs evidently upgraded itself
to cause this conflict. I tried to post to AVG's questions
and answers, but it won't let me in for some reason.

This isn't the end of the world. AVG is working fine in
all the other aspects, but I'd like to find the cause of this
problem.

Has anyone else run into this problem ?

Email scanning in an anti-virus provides no added protection and often
screws up the email proram. Turn it of.

If you run antivirus software, you ought to stick with one for everyday use,
and not use two simultaneously. The advantages, if any, do not justify the
potential conflicts. The MVP's on this site generally do not advocate
running simultaneous resident AV.

Don't have two running at the same time. Using a second to do
occasional scans is fine though.

From Paul,
It seems you all are in agreement that 2 anti virus programs
should not be run. I have heard this before, but thought since
everyone says "run more than one anti spyware because none
of them find every spyware. So I thought, maybe AVG might
find once in a while, something PC-cillin didn't find !!
But, maybe you gies are right, and I think I'll let AVG go.

You can have both installed fine, just don't have both running in memory
for real time scanning and protection. It is wise to use a second AV to
do a scan from time to time.

The update for AVG reset the program's defaults.

Email scanning is usually a waste of time anyway.

Yes, I got tired of AVG updates reseting the email scanning defaults so
I uninstalled it and re-installed it without the email scanning option
at all.

Yeh, right...
Didn't you know that the majority of viruses and trojans come into a
computer system via email?

I can't count the number of times an antivirus program has caught
various viruses over the years because I had email scanning turned on.
By the way, it is almost always not a good idea to have two antivirus
programs running on your system at the same time, just as it is not a
good idea to have two software firewalls running on your system.

No, they get delivered that way; they get *deployed* by user ignorance
and mistakes.

It is perfectly fine to have two a/v programs installed, just only have
active.
