third-party scanning software?

Is anyone aware of a good third-party scanning app that circumvents the
need to install / utilize the scanning software developed by the
manufacturer? I have an Epson 1670 and the scanning software associated
with it is the most unstable app I have ever seen.

Any recommendations?

Thanks -

I was pleased with Vuescan with the Epson 2450 years ago. It has its
detractors here, but you can (and should) ignore them. It supports hundreds
of scanners, runs on 'Doze, 64-bit 'Doze, Linux, and Mac, and you don't need
the manufacturer's drivers.

The last time I was using it, it just produced files that you'd later load
into Photoshop.

Download a trial copy of Vuescan from hamrick.com and see if
you like it. The interface is a bit quirky, but it doesn't use
any of the Epson software.

I don't know Epson software but Vuescan is bound to be worse because
it's notoriously buggy and unreliable.

Trying is free, but some features are disabled. It all depends on your
requirements but if you find a Vuescan version that works for you,
don't automatically upgrade because this group is littered with
Vuescan victims desperately trying to find an older version that still
pretended to work.

Furthermore, with some scanners (Canon?) Vuescan does require you to
install manufacturer's low level drivers. So make sure you check
that's not the case with Epson if you want to remove all trace of
their software.

Hi Donny, have you managed to get DonnyScan working yet ? We are all
waiting to see the superb results that can be achieved when a skilled
operator uses your wonderful software.

But wait, hark, do I hear a golden parrot approaching ?

And in general, since there are some scanners that need some driver
data at the Windows OS level to be recognized, you could in addition
try to download/install the "scanners.inf" from
<http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html>.

Of course you should only do that if everything else fails, and as a
prudent precaution, one should take a System Restore snapshot of the
current Registry settings, before experimentation. The registry is
easier to clean-up if it isn't a solution because there are other
fundamental issues.

Of course, the only thing that notorious here is that I enjoy spamming
this group with my uninformed and ignorant postings. I was once called
an "obnoxious, ignorant asshole" here, and took extreme umbrage. I
didn't think I was that obnoxious.

Of course, I know that there are hundreds of users who have gotten
fixes to their VueScan problems when they report them in detail,
but I enjoy misleading people here.
