I have a few machines, all XP Pro SP2 that the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service
is missing from. We found out we had this issue, because we are moving these
PCs to a new domain. When trying to join these machines to the domain, we
get the error that the network location cannot be found or contacted.
However, DNS is set correctly, we can ping properly, and there are no
firewalls in the way.

I've done a search online and cannot find anything about how to re-install
the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service. Does anyone have any idea how we can
re-install this service? I've found lots of posts about problems when its
disabled, but can't find anyting saying what to do when the service is
missing alltogether.

If you right-click on the network connection, select Properties, and look on
the General Tab, is TCP/IP showing there as being installed?

Yes, TCP/IP is installed and working, the PC can ping on the network, browse
the internet, I can connect remotely thorugh PCAnywhere over TCP/IP, its
working, but can't join these PCs to the domain, and the symptoms look like
its because the NetBIOS helper servcice is missing. I was able to export the
registry settings from my PC for this service, which put the entry back in
the services MMC, but it won't start, the local service password is probably
not the same, and I get a device error on the service when I attempt to start
it. So that didn't work, and it sas that the the executible does not have
the service implimented. I re-installed SP2 but that did not fix the issue.
How can I get the helper service back? This is causing problems on these few
PCs. I can't join them to our domain.

Could not start the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service on Local computer
Error 1083: The Executable program that this service is configured to run in
does not impliment the service.

Any other ideas?

Sorry, no. the only things that come to mind are, is this machine connected
to the network? If so try it disconnected, and are you logged in as a Local
administrator?
