In W2K with all updates applied
for the last 2 -3 weeks I have seen my puter "freeze" for a minute or so
when I use any browser and try to load a page or change to a different page.
In the Task Manager a process named "System" will take over the CPU.
I don't recall that happening prior to the time noted above.
I ran Malware Byte, Norton and AVAST checks - system is clean.
The registry is cleaned weekly as are the caches for the browsers.
Does someone know what the "System" task does and if its needed?
If no how do I kill it?
I tried using kill from task manager - not allowed.

Found this online:
"With system problems and/or services running problems,youre best bet is
to read and follow directions in kb310560 Also,if thiers a service causing a
problem,go to run,type: services.msc In msc, locate the service,double click
on it,then adjust to disable/auto/or end service"

Another poster stated his/her similar problem was caused by a USB connected
printer.

My problem was an old version of Norton Anti-virus.
It had not been updating since 10/2010.
It had not been a problem until now.
When I saw that I thought I should update the program
so I dumped Norton and put in AVAST.
All is well now.

If you are using the free version of Avast and aren't happy with it, try the
free Avira.

PS: Happy to hear you solved it. How did you find the problem? Was it the
KB article or someway else?

Twas a twist of fate
I saw Norton not updated since last fall
and it was free to me with my puter
(Thanx Motorola!)
so rather than buy a new Norton
I installed free AVAST
and deleted Norton.
and the problem dis-appeared
