Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Since I started using a registry cleaner program (Advanced SystemCare
Professional), I've noticed that every once in a while the system will go
through two startups.

The first startup begins normally, but then after the Welcome screen
there's a pause of several seconds. Then a window pops up in the upper left
corner of my screen that says "setting up personalized settings" followed
by "msiexec /fuo {product ID} /qn". There's a second window that appears
right after that but it disappears before I can read it. The system then
goes through what appears to be a normal shutdown, and then immediately
restarts a second time, and from that point on everything seems fine.

This doesn't happen at every startup. I'm pretty sure it has something to
do with Advanced SystemCare, but I can't pinpoint the cause. The anomaly
disappears if I disable all of ASC's automated functions.

It's not a critical problem, but it has aroused my curiosity. I'd welcome
any insights anyone can offer.

Well... the solution is quite obvious, isn't it? What benefits are
these useless registry cleaners providing? What good do they do? Do
they make your Windows installation run better? Quite to the contrary
they muck up your Windows installation so why bother with them?

It doesn't "muck up" my Windows installation. My PC is optimized for gaming
(dual core, 8 gig of ram) and the registry has produced a noticeable
improvement in my gaming experience. The doubling of the restart process is
not really a problem, given that my system starts quickly. I was merely
looking for some suggestions as to how to to deal with the the restart
issue. Given what Advanced SystemCare has done for me, I can live with the
restart issue. I was looking for some suggestions on how to deal with the
startup issue without sacrificing the benefits that the registry cleaner
has given me. Sorry you couldn't help, but thanks for your input anyway.

Thank you for the information. I'm reconsidering my opinion on registry
cleaners.

I've also grabbed erunt.

If that's your only problem, consider yourself lucky.

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

I stay away from registry cleaners. Everyone I've seen that uses one
ends up with some sort of problem.
