Hi I have earphones plugged in at the front of my PC and speakers at the back.
Both outputs are visible in the 'sounds' window in control panel. Normally,
the one who has 'select default' activated (has a green check) is the one
working.

However, something very strange happens when I switch between them.
For example, when I have been using the speakers(plugged in at the back) for
a while, and plug in the headphones at the front, go to sound in control
panel and activate the headphones, they dont work. If I turn off all sound
and try to play a sound again about 3 minutes later, the headphones work!
Anyone know how I can get them to work immediately please? If there's
something you dont understand in my explanation, please ask.

Yes, I just checked and Windows has determined that my drivers are up to
date. Any other thoughts?

You should go to the manufacturer's web site to see if there are newer drivers.?
What is your audio adapter?
On-board or add-in card?
There is really no way that Windows itself knows that you have the latest
drivers.

Its an Internal High Definition Audio Bus manufactured by Microsoft. Its a
nightmare finding drivers for it - MS seems to insist that you use Windows
Update to update your drivers.
Any advise?

Microsoft does NOT manufacture audio adapters. It is most likely Realtek or
Sigma Tel.

In Device Manager you can use the drop down list on the Details tab of the
Properties page of your sound device to obtain the name of the Manufacturer.

If it is Realtek, go here to get the latest drivers (v. 1.67):

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs

Make SURE it is Realtek first.

Thanks Cal Bear, you're not gonna believe it though, but even in the details
tab on the device manager (for the High Definition Audio Device), when you
select 'manufacturer, it says only 'Microsoft'.
