Friends who just migrated to vista, and recieved an outlook message in .emal
format. They fiddled for hours trying to open something that was supported
natively on their XP system.
I helped them workaround by changing the file from .email to .eml extension,
then windows mail could open it fine (and get the attachments wihtin, etc)-
but this is a pretty poor workaround - how do I set up windows mail so that
it can read .email when it comes in like it used to?
Thanks in advance...

You need to create a file type for .email files and associate this type with
Windows Mail. Save the .email attachment to your desktop, Shift-right click
it and choose 'open with'. Choose WinMail and check the box for always use
this program. This adds the .email file type and associates it with Windows
Mail.
