How to Stop Outlook 2003 from Moving to Next Message After Delete

I have recently been migrated to Office 2003. When I delete an email in the
preview pane, Outlook automatically lands on the next one. I would prefer it
didn't do this and instead waited for me to click on the next message that I
want to see - it's often not the next one in line that I'm going to. Is
there a way to disable this feature?

Thanks,
Nancy

I have that option set as "After moving or deleting an open item, return to
the Inbox". And when it returns to the inbox, it still lands on the top
email that is in there. I'd prefer it not to land on that email. It's
getting marked as read, when in fact I haven't read it.

Sorry if I'm not explaining my situation clearly - I'm new to Outlook.

Thanks!
Nancy

Then turn off the Reading Pane in the Inbox and it will just highlight the
first mail item. You have "Mark item as read in preview pane after xx
seconds." selected. You could also turn that selection off. I prefer not to
preview mail in the Inbox.

Outlook 2003: tools >> options >> other >> reading pane:

deselect "mark item as read when selection changes"
deselect "mark item as read when viewed in reading pane," if you want to require manually marking as unread, or just enter an appropriate number of seconds, say 120 or whatever, in which case the message it lands on will not switch to unread for 2 minutes.
