I have a friend with a windows 2000 box that has just
installed an XFX GeForce FX 5600 and is now receiving a
0x0000001E Kmode exception not handled error on start.
there are no driver files identified in the error and I am
not familiar enough with w2k to get through it on the
phone with him, does anyone have any ideas?

Have him boot in safe mode.
Uninstall the nVidia driver.
He should then be able to bood in "normal" mode.
Download and install DirectX 9.
Download and install the latest driver from the nVidia website.

Should be okay then.
