Hi AG,

First, I would recommend looking at each program's options and see if there
is a run at boot option. If there is, disable it from there. If not go to
start.run and type msonnfig click ok and go to the startup tab to un-check
any program you do not want to run. The reason I suggest going to the
program first is, some applications will re-enter themselves as start items
once they have been opened even though you have un-checked them in msconfig.

Mike Lin provides a handy little free program named "Startup Control
Panel" which is easy to use and will enable you to easily remove items
from the Start Menu. From here: http://www.mlin.net/ . While there, also
look at "StartupMonitor" plus the other stuff.

How do you know which programs are REQUIRED to start up that I shouldn't uncheck???

*No* programs are required by Windows. The only programs you
should start (automatically or manually) are those that you
decide do something valuable for you. Obviously those should
include your anti-virus program and firewall, but beyond that
it's entirely up to you.

But that doesn't mean you should just stop everything from
running. I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running the
minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you,
you should be concerned, not with how many of these programs you
run, but which.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with google
searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.
