I have programs which start themselves each time I boot up (using Windows XP
on a Dell 3100). One is concerned with a network (which I don't have!) and
the other is Dell's back-up program. I'm sure that I've read somewhere that
I can 'turn them off' without deleting them entirely from my system. This
would save the trouble of having to wait for them to load at each start up
only to then have to close them down. Can someone please jog my memory? I'd
be much obliged.

Click on Start/Run and enter MSCONFIG, then click ok. Then on the next
screen, click on startup and uncheck the applications you don't want to
start, click ok and reboot.
