SP4 problems

For years, my W2K with SP4 ran okay. Last week, following a virus
attack, I reformatted c: and reinstalled W2K. To make a very long story
short, without SP4, webpages open fast. With SP4, they are virtually
impossible to open, with either of my browsers, Sea Monkey and IE.

I got the SP4 update right from microsoft. File name is
SP4express_EN.exe, size 589K, version 1.16.120.0, June 20, 2003.

Odd thing: before all my problems started, I distinctly remember that if
I went to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, there were multiple entries
related to SP4; maybe they were later patches to SP4. When I reinstall
SP4 today, and then go to remove it, there is just a single entry.

Am I missing some patches or other SP4 updates that could be causing my
problem?

From googling the problem, I notice that other have had this problem
with SP4; when they returned to SP3, the problem disappeared. The odd
thing is SP4 worked okay in my system until the virus problem.

Thanks,

Ray

There are other patches in edition to sp4, I cannot access my win2k sys at
the mo. to check
I assume you did install the neccessary hw drivers after the format from
manufacturers sites, & not winupdate

Yes, I now see an 'Automatic update' ball next to the clock in the
system tray. It shows I need 2 updates.

I'm not so sure the hw drivers are the latest from the manufacturers'
sites, rather than the originals when I bought the equipment. I don't
know what winupdate is, so I haven't used it.

Thanks,

Ray

Problem solved:

In the lower right corner of my screen is an Automatic Updates" icon. I
double-clicked on it and downloaded two updates (using W2K without any
service packs). After installing them, I verified that the web pages
still opened. They did. I then installed SP4. While the installation
seemed to hang at the end, forcing me to hit the Reset switch, once the
computer restarted Explorer showed that SP4 had been installed. Best of
all, the web pages now open properly.

Using Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, I saw that something called
"Windows 2000 Hotfix(Pre-SP2)[See Q280838 for more information]" had
been installed by the Automatic Update. That's how I probably got all
the other ones, too.

Hello Ray,

I would not wait until you get all updates automatic. Go to www.windowsupdate.com
and choose for the beginning the "Express" update and at the end you have
also to check the other one and install additional patches that are not come
with express.

Best regards
