My sound has gone all wonky... I think it has to do with
the fact that several (19) of my Systme Volume
Information files were infected with the msblaster worm
and were deleted. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

thank you.

Mari sweetheart, first things first.

System volume information - which files ? Do you mean the restoration system
files ? If so, those won't affect the sound. However if they did contain
virii you need to delete them to be on the safe side. So, right click on My
Computer > Properties > Advanced > System Restore - tick the box turning it
off. You might want to back up any data you have before you do this as
you'll be tightrope walking without a safety net. > click apply, then ok and
reboot. XP will get rid of the Restore files.

Then, once re-booted, right click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
System Restore - un-tick the box turning it off, in other words restart it
> Apply > ok and re-boot. Once re-started I suggest you set a restore point

immediately, then you have a safety net back.

Second things second.

If it was a question of the actual sound drivers then I hope you noted them
down as you'll need to extract them from the XP CD and put them in the
correct folders - ouch I hear you say.

Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK > Expand File > fill in all the details,
browse to locate what you want on the CD, where you want to put it/them etc.

If you need more help, re-post.

CHeers,
Jerry

thank you for your help Jerry.
Yes I believe it was the restoration files that were
deleted... "C:\system Volume Inofrmation\_Resto~2\RP46
\.......exe." (I only managed to get parts of one file
written down.) Norton Antivirus deleted these files for
me, but to be safe I did what you suggested in
your 'first things first'.. unfortunately the sound is
still weird.

If it has something to do with the sound drivers then
yes, lol I am saying ouch! I tried locating what I wanted
from the recovery CD but I'm not entirely sure what it is
I want. I'll try again though...

Once again, thank you

Mari

Whoa, there is another thing you could do : re-install your soundcard
drivers. You should have them either on a CD or you can visit the
manufacturer's website to download the latest.

Cheers,
Jerry
