Sound has gone...

Some weeks ago, for no reason, my computer - suddenly -
stopped playing any sound, except from Windows Media
Player. MusicMatch Jukebox and all other system sounds
don't work. When I try to play under MMJukebox, an error
message appears: "WaveOut format not supported"!
Knowledge base has no help for this sound "fail". Things
I've tried unsuccessfully:

1 - changed my sound board;
2 - removed my fax/modem board;
3 - edited registry for problems (none found!);
4 - updated system (windowsupdate);
5 - updated sound board driver (no need for that, since
driver was up to date);
6 - cried!;
7 - got furious.

There are two strange behaviours I can see:

1 - Under voice (Control Panel->Audio and Sound Device
Properties): I can not fix the "Default device" listed.
Anytime I choose my device (Emu10Kx Audio [DC00]), apply
changes, close window ('Ok') and return to the option, it
becomes empty again. Once empty, I can not
use "Volume", "Advanced" and "Test hardware" buttons.

2 - Under Sound (Control Panel->Audio and Sound Device
Properties): any "Program Event" I click, the play button
remains unabled (gray). So, I can ever click the button.

What else am I supposed to do?

Thanks in advance,

Leo

I have your same problem and I have tried all the registry fixes and I STILL
haven't found a solution
Please post back if you find a solution

Have you tried to do a Restore of your system? You can go back up to 90 days
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Also check below trouble shooter. Click on "Where did my Sounds go?

All solutions applied did not work: restoring sounds,
system restore point or any other approach. If a miracle
does exist, please anyone tell me, before I have to save
files and settings for a clean XP installation.

Thanks
