When I check the status of my sound card in device manager, device manager says that it is working fine. However, when I open "sounds and audio devices" the volume tab says that there is no audio device.

When I try to play sound through winamp, I get the followin error:
Bad directsound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078

I thouht that reinstalling directx might solve the problem, but nothing has worked so far. I can supply the output of dxdiag if anyone thinks it might be useful.

Further, I have contacted the manufacturer of the card (creative labs) and they assure me that this is a windows problem.

While these links had a lot of information to offer, none of them really gave viable solutions. Most of them discussed re-installing my sound card or updating my sound card drivers (which I've already tried). The one exception was the fellow who just re-installed windows XP. I am reluctant to try such drastic matters.

Is there any other alternative?
