I have a client whose event log is filled with DCOM and service control
manager errors related to the Software Shadow Service (as pasted below).

When I try to start the Software Shadow Service manualy, I get a dialog
box that shows "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion."
It was my understanding that the Software Shadow Service was pretty much
"optional," only used by backup, but that appears not to be the case.
This client's log fills with these errors (repeatedly) during a defrag:
