Slowing computer

It seems that this message has been appearing at somewhat
regular intervals on this message board, but no real
response has been given. I am running Windows XP Pro on
a Intel 733 processer with 256 mb of RAM. When I start
my computer up, it runs fine. After a while, performance
slows dramatically - to the point where if I try to save
something I am working on, it takes up to one minute.
Other symptoms are non responsive programs (they are
actually responsive, but it takes up to 10 minutes or
more to load them) and other slow actions (for example,
in Excel, when I try to resize a row or column, it can
take up to 2 minutes for the application to react). When
I reboot, the computer works well again. Unfortunately,
I need to reboot about 3-4 times a day (or more). I
asked around and read these message boards and have been
finding that the problem is not isolated to my computer -
many people are running into the same problem. Does
anyone have any idea about what is causing this problem
and fixes for this?

Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

The original 811493 has been replaced with a revised version. On May 28, 2003, Microsoft released a revised version of the 811493 security update for Windows XP SP1 to address this problem. Remove the old one and replace with the new one. You can remove through Add / Remove Programs -Start, Control Panel.

Have you looked for clues in Task Manager? Ctrl+Alt+Del?

dave I used to have this amongst a lot of other page faults etc ,I tried all
kinds of remedies but found that xp needs more memory than 256mb of ram i
put an extra 512 mb in and it has run sweetly since, Tell
