I have been experiencing moderate slowdowns when surfing
the web. At the same time I'm also experiencing a
slowdown in the windows explorer.
I have been attempting to isolate the problem with the
Task Manager, and discovered that Windows Explorer
(explorer.exe) is the only task running utilizing about
16% of the CPU. What's odd about this is that the
explorer has not been launched and it appears to be
running in the background. At the time I'm observing the
task manager, (explorer.exe) should be at 0% utilization.
I have a DSL service provider and connect via XP's
services not the service provider's. I'm also using IE as
my web browser.
If I reboot the system operates as it should. Only when
Win Explorer is launched does it use CPU resources then
it drops to zero until you do something with it.
Another way to correct it is to disconnect the network
connection in network services.
My conclusion is that the symptom manifests itself after
being on the web for a period of time. What I can't
figure is what is causing (explorer.exe) to run when I'm
not using it?
I would appreciate any information anyone might have on
this issue.
