Analog video cassete players had a jog shuttle allowing you to
play the video in slow motion or fast forward or evern reverse the motion
backwards.....

does anyone know of a video (media) player that can do this?

I dont mind if its shareware...

www.irfanview.com
with all the plugins,
can play mpg's
(and if trying to play a .avi file do not work
try first to rename it to .mpg,
or install the proper codec,
refer to GSpot http://gspot.headbands.com/ )
if it can play,
then the speed can be set using the commandmenu
in the lower left of the video
to set to speed from 5% to 200%,
but not backwards,
this you have to do by dragging the slider backwards yourself.

Media player classic. has two buttons on the toolbar: speed up and slow
down. Not sure about reverse motion, in DivX that would be a problem.

Media Player Classic (freeware). Pause the video with it, then just
hit left/right arrow keys to go back/forward one frame. Hold them
down to do it slow-mo. Or even hit shift+left/right arrow to jump
back/forwards 5 seconds.
