Have Windows XP home, 2002.
Installed on a notebook, which is a couple of years old, so I'd expect it to
be a bit slow.......
However, it's close to intolerable these days.
Doesn't like doing more than one thing at once.
Not trying to do anything too big, just internet (AOL), Word etc occasional
use of audio cd.
Have anti-spyware and run regular sweeps, regularly clear out cookies,
occasionally do a de-frag.
When booting up it "appears" to boot up quite quickly, with wallpaper and
icons appearing, but nothing will respond for 5-10 minutes.
Any tips for speeding this up, or is the notebook just getting old?

1 - get rid of AOL
2 - minimise security software usage - try some light weight ones like AVG

3 - defrag ain't what Everyone thinks it is - it's a fallacy that it speeds
up your computer (I have been using Microsoft W. from day 1 and defrag speeds
up the computer untill you start creating new files - now every ne file you
make goes towards the end of the defragged content and new content from the
defrag region that needs to expand goes above this, therfore making the
needle in your hard drive fly from eg. you Internet Cache which was near the
start of your hard drive -but is now bigger than what it was when defragged
is now split between all your new files and even your old ones makng seeks
and even reads for files noise and clumsy, and hardrive wearing- believe me
never touch defrag - but it's too late for you now)

4. Read up - on the internet ... on
Speed up /Boost Faster etc Windows &|| XP
There are plenty of tips and tricks, particularily look at removing
unncessary windows components eg the indexing service and MSN. -there are
plenty more too like if your not on the network then why bother having your
Ethernet device driver load.

5. Get a new computer
