I have a P3 with 655mb RAM. PC Chips m/b model: m756mrt
and AMI BIOS. I run windows 2000 pro with service pack 4.
I have been having problems with my hdd reading in PIO
mode. I have been through many methods and processes for
the past 2 weeks to resolve this this problem but none
worked. I finally narrowed it down to my SIS PCI IDE
Controller driver. I have downloaded a driver from
driverguide.com and it worked fine for about 20 min. HDD
and DVD ROM running DMA Mode and Very Fast Loading. WOW,
now thats more like it. Then a blue screen reading:

"Hardware Malfunction"
"Call your hardware vendor for support"
"The system has halted"

I have checked to see if the driver was digitally signed
and it read: "Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility
Publisher" so it seemed to be the solution.

I have also downloaded a driver from SIS Corporation and
that one didn't even work.

So if anyone knows a solution I will be very greatful and
apreciative.

other info:

Download proper driver and BIOS from www.pcchips.com.tw; update the BIOS;
update SIS driver to the Standard IDE one; reboot; install SIS driver.

Edit registry:
HKLM\System\CCS\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

0000 - IDE controller itself - reg_dword "EnableUDMA66", value 1.
0001 - primary channel,
0002 - secondary channel.

Both channels, dwords:
MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed 0xFFFFFFFF
SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed 0xFFFFFFFF
UserMasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed 0xFFFFFFFF
UserSlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed 0xFFFFFFFF
and
MasterDeviceTimingMode 0xFFFF or 0xFFFFF
SlaveDeviceTimingMode 0xFFFF or 0xFFFFF
or
for Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 and PIO4 (burners, very old HDDs...) - 0x0410
for Ultra ATA33 (CDROMs, DVDs, old HDDs...) - 0x2010
for Ultra ATA66 (just HDDs) - 0x8010
for Ultra ATA100 (modern HDDs) - 0x10010
for Ultra ATA133 (ultramodern HDDs) - 0x12010
