Why is my XP taking so long to shut down.
have deleted all the unnecessary things in Startup but compared to a few
weeks ago it is now taking ages to shut down.
I have installed a second copy of XP on another physical drive but don't see
that should make any difference. Now have a boot loader with he two copies
showing.
TNX for nay suggestions

Without telling people anything about your computer, other than the fact
that it has some version of Windows XP, the most you can hope for is a
lucky guess. Here's mine:

"User Profile Hive Cleanup Service"

Run Task Manager and review all the running processes. Sort on the CPU
column so you see what is dragging the system down. I can't tell you what
should and should not be running because it depends on what you are doing
but this will at least give you a start.

Read the other suggestions you've gotten, but also tell us what you
mean by "ages." How long, at least approximately, is "ages"?

In my view, even two minutes is a long way from "ages." Your choice of
course, but to me, that's such a short time that if performance was
otherwise OK, I wouldn't worry about this at all, especially since I
normally shut down no more frequently than once a day.

In the past I have been accused of 'dribbling' on too much so hence the
short note. Ages is about one to two minutes. And the hard drive doesn't
seem to be working either. XP is the Home version. I have run Spy Bot and my
virus program so all clear there. Will try that clean up program and see
what happens. TNX

What I now found is...if I start windows and then shut it down before doing
anything, it closes in seconds. Open email and firefox for example it goes
back to about one to two minutes so something there is taking a while to
close. maybe an addon in firefox is the problem.
