If you use 2007 specific formulas you can save to .xls no problem, no
data loss. If you use tables and conditional formatting, or big grids
you'll lose stuff. But the formulas IFERROR, SUMIFS etc will still be
there when you open it back up. You'll get #NAME? errors in Excel 2003,
but it will calc fine in 2007.
I would recommend getting people to save and close out of the shared
workbook regularly and then unsharing it to clear all the history crap.
(we did it every 2 weeks or so for workbooks that were open all day
shared between 3 or 4 people)
You can then reshare it and no actual data will be lost, just the
history of what each cell has been over time.
Shared workbooks are not the most reliable sadly.
