Sending Calendar Invitations

For some reason that I cannot fathom, Outlook (2003) is sending out my email
messages without problems. but when I invite participants to an appointment,
the invitation stays stuck in the outbox and I usually get a send error
message as well.

How can I get Outlook to play nice?
