SDR SDRAM advice needed

Hello there!

I have recently bought some 512 MB SDRAM sticks, using 8x Samsung
K4S511632C-TC60 modules. The modules were labled PC166 (of course not
officially, but using 6ns RAM from Samsung).

Trouble is, none of the 10 modules wants to work in any motherboard I
tried em in, 2x i845 chipsets (1x Asus P4B, 1x some other), 2x KT133A
(1xAbit KT7A 1.0, 1xMSI KT7 Turbo 2). This led me to believe that the
modules are fishy, but there seems to be another possible explanation
for this: the KT-133A seems to accept only 256Mbit density modules,
which the i845 should, however.

Is there a logical explanation for those modules not working (and if
there is, can anyone guess at a motherboard capable of running these
modules)?

Cheers,

Bernhard

Yep, acording to the datasheet the KT133A does 256Mb, no mention of 512Mb
DRAMs.

What speed/latencies are you trying to run them at in a i845 system? Will
they not run at 133MHz? Have you tried setting timings manually - wouldn't
be the first time a SPD was bad.

I tried running them at 100/133 MHz, setting speeds manually. At 166
MHz memory speed (125 MHz FSB), my P4 1.7 GHz with stock cooling does
not boot, unfortunately. However, the modules should boot with 133 MHz
anyway, shouldn't they?

Cheers,

Bernhard

Ah so you're overclocking the FSB. I've no idea what FSB/memclock ratios
the i845 supports but in general running memclock faster than FSB is not
something I'd bother even trying - benefits are minimal and problems are
common. If the memory works when in lock-step with FSB, leave it at that
is my advice.

Unfortunately the memory does not run at 100 MHz FSB / 100 MHz Memory
either. With my current memory I run it at 100/133. The seller claims
the memory only works at 166 MHz, but I can't see how that would make
sense.

OTOH I am willing to try it out with other combos if I can get my
fingers on them, which boards/chipsets should theoretically run 512MBit
memory (SDR SDRAM)?

Cheers,

Bernhard

It doesn't make sense at all unless maybe the SPD is screwed up in some
way.

IIRC Intel skipped 166MHz FSB/memclock for desktop systems and most systems
which allow 166MHz FSB are DDR-SDRAM anyway.

Unfortunately, they run at no speed, neither 100/133 (with 100 MHz
FSB).

Is there any board/chipset other than the i845 you could recommend for
trying them out?
