scanner keeps locking up

I've had a KM Dimage Scan Dual IV for about a year now with virtually no
problems. However during the last couple weeks it keeps freezing up on me.
I can understand that maybe by scanning alot of slides there is the
potential for overheating which can cause a lockup. However, the happens
with almost every film holder I put in. What I do is put in the holder and
click the index scan button on the software utility. It will start to do
the adjusting focus function on the first frame, but after a few seconds
will stop responding. I can't close the utility program. I have to use
alt-ctrl-delete to close it. Nor can I eject the holder or turn of the
scanner. I have to unplug it and pull out the holder. I then close the
door, turn the scanner back on, start up the software and repeat the
process.
FWIW, scanner setup: scanning @3200dpi
16bit color depth
8x multi-sample
35mm index scan priority set
to quality
autofocus and auto exporsure
retouch level set to high.

My system: P4 3.0 processor
1.0GB DDR466 memory
WinXP sp2

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to solve the issue?

Thanks in advance

And yes I did do a quick google search, but most of the results seem to do
with the pc locking up and not just the scanner. I do not have any problem
with my entire PC locking up.

You have worn it out.
The Scan Dual IV has a limited lifetime. It wears out with a lot of
scanning.

Read the Addendum at the end of this page.
