Scanner Gone

Suddenly I can't scan. My scanner, an HP5200C, no longer appears in
Device Manager, not even with an exclamation mark, and Scanners in
Control panel is blank. Using instructions from the HP site, I
uninstalled and reinstalled the software and, presumably the scanner,
but nothing has changed.

Any suggestions?

Does the device manager have a device called Unknown Device or similar
under the "other Devices" category ( ? Icon ).

Normally a USB cable works loose or goes bad and connectivity is lost.
Recheck your USB data cable connections and make sure you are getting power
to the scanner.

The only unknown/uninstalled "Other Device" is a PCI Multimedia device.
That's not the scanner, is it?

Right, I thought that might be the problem, so I did check the USB
connection. No luck. By the way, I notice that HP lamp and ctfmon are
running. Does that mean anything?

I'm using Windows 98, Second Edition. Should I try installing the
scanner to my laptop, where I run Windows 2000?

I would do this even if it's just to verify the scanner and cabling are in
good order. If it works on the W2K system, then the W9x drivers would
appear to be the problem on your current system.

No luck. The scanner doesn't work on the W2K machine either. I'll buy
another USB cable and try that, just in case. Stay tuned...

Perhaps, because W98SE does not know what to do with it. Was it there
when the HP was working?
Remove it from Device Manager, unplug the scanner's USB cable, restart
Windows, cancel the <found new hardware> process, then go to |Control
Panel | Add/Remove Hardware | Uninstall/Unplug... | Uninstall | <SpcBar>
box Show Hidden Devices, then scroll to the bottom of the devices window.
Select that last entry then <PgUp> until you find any or multiple entries
for the scanner. Cursor to that entry, | next | yes | finish |. Restart.
Repeat until all the HP entries are gone. [this is so tedious!] While
you are in there, do you find devices you no longer use? Make them go away
the same way. Reload the HP sw before replugging the USB cable.
Regards,
Theo
