My computer got caught in a restart loop after i
restarted it due to some problems with applications and
was really slow, but after i restarted, i only got as far
as an apology that windows could not start and might be
because of a hardware change, which is not true. So
someone told me i might have caught a trojan off the
internet, and he was an hp reseller that had experienced
this customers and had to reformat and reinstall to fix.
I tried to save my files somewhat so from the start up
utilities i used scandisk and even made an undo disk just
in case. well scandisk said it fixed it, but installed
xp on another harddrive, made the original one a slave,
and accessed the drive and all i see is a bunch of 4kb
and 8kb file sized programs or something with all the
same file name except a different number, but windows
does not know what program created the file and when i
open the drive, it does describe that these are fragments
that scandisk saved. theres about 2gb total but how to i
access the files or go ahead to retore them to what they
were, if they are even usable...

Hello Bert,

Most likely they will be unusable and you can get rid of them, but take a
look at them first. Please read the following explanation.

Lost File Fragments:
You can use ScanDisk to detect file fragments that are not in use by
programs. File fragments are parts of files on your disk that were lost by
a program. If you want ScanDisk to remove file fragments to recover space
on your disk, click Free. If you want Scandisk to save file fragments,
click Convert To Files. When you save file fragments to your disk, the file
fragments are converted to file names such as File0000.chk and are stored
in the root folder of your disk. You can use any text editor (such as
Notepad) to view the saved file. This file may or may not contain any
useful information.

Best regards,

hey, thank you for the reply. I resolved to using third
party software like "GetDataBack-fat" to retrieve my
files and it worked better than i thought, but the files
I had open when the system crashed as explained
previously were corrupt. These included exel files from
Office XP mostly, and some Microsoft Works files. The
Microsoft Works files that I'm having problems with get
an error when I open them, saying the file is read only
or already open (weird), which is what was happening
before the crash i was tring to save the file.
Curiously, only recent files, within the past 6 weeks or
so were affected. I will try to research this and
continue to try to help others on this board. It's also
a great way to keep up with current issues that might
help maintain my programs in the future. thnx again
