I have WinXP Pro on disc and SP 2 on another disc. If I run scandisk
from the WinXP disc and it replaces corrupt or missing files, will
Window's Updates see the older files and again automatically update
them as necessary?

Can I run scandisk using the SP 2 disc instead of the original Windows
disc?

Thank you.

Why don't you slipstream your XP Pro Cd and your SP 2 CD. You can get the
instructions here.

Thank you for your reply, Mr. Barry, it is an excellent one. In the
interim, I should be grateful for a reply to my original inquiry.

Thank you.

Scandisk is a Windows 98 utility, which does not exist in Windows XP.
In XP Scandisk has been replaced by Error Checker (chkdsk).
However, your question relates to System File Checker a utility for
checking drivers in Windows XP.

If your original Windows XP disk is pre SP2 then you will encounter a
problem
running System File Checker when it requests that you insert your
Windows
XP disk. If you create a slipstreamed combination of your original
Windows
XP disk and your SP2 disk you will avoid the difficulty which otherwise
arises.

I owe both responder to my inquiry an apology. If I am going to
request assistance, I need to at least get my terms right. I did mean
SFC, I think I was confusing Scandisk with the SFC switch /scannow and
yes, I have encountered difficulties running SFC in prior attempts. So
it's time to slip stream and get on with this. As a first time
slipstreamer I hold the concern that I may get even one thing wrong
and mess up the entire process. Still I never learned anything when my
system was running smoothly, this will not be the exception.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

Other ways to check on drivers.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click
on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not
checked. Post a list of what you find.

If you run sfc /scannow using the WinXP CD and you have WinXP + SP2
then it will ask for the WinXP + SP2 CD.
The XP CD nor the SP CD will work. Slipstream first then run sfc
/scannow.
