hi i am using a smc barricade router. i have tried to connect 2 pcs to the
ports but only one of them works at any time. the other pc says the cable
is disconnected.

if i swap the cables around the opposite happens. only one of the lights on
the router flashes (for the port that has the "working" pc.), the other
light for the "disconnected" pc is dead.

not only can i not access the internet from the "disconnnected" pc , but i
cant see the other pc on the network either. (which makes me think it's not
a isp ip/mac address issue)

i am no idea what to do to fix it , any ideas?

Swap the cables around means what, though? Switch the physical cables
themselves, or change which ports they're going into in the hub? I presume
your router has a built-in hub/switch...

only one of the

No, it's probably a physical network problem - bad cable or bad port on the
hub/switch.

the isp provided the ip, i've tried setting the router to use static ip and
dynamic ip, but neither seem to work.

i mean swap the pyshical cables (at the ends that go into the PCs). I left
the connections at the router the same. so this means it's not a problem
with the actual wire.

Try using another connection on the router.

verify that you do not have the same IP address on both machines
....start run - command - ipconfig
....turn off both pcs. turn one on first - is it the second that does not
work
....turn off both pcs. turn one the other first - is it the second that does
not work

If the problem follows the PC then it's the PC or its card.
....remove all network settings and reinstall. if still no swap cards

If the problem follows the port on the router then it is a bad cable or
router port.
....Swap the cables - if it's still the port then the router port is bad
