Roaming User Profiles and Folder Redirection

Hello,

I have read the Step-by-Step Guide to User Data and User Settings
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...ement/userdata.
asp). After reading this doc, I have decided that I want to use Roaming user
Profiles coupled with Folder Redirection.

I have a few questions. First of all, is there some sort of guide that deals
directly with this configuration? I have read numerous sources including the
Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kits, etc.
Everything I have read mostly involves theory.

The reason, I am looking for a guide is to answer my second question (and
any more that may pop up). If you use folder redirection with RUPs, where do
you redirect the folder? For example, where would you redirect the My
Documents folder? The profiles are already sitting on the server and the My
Docs folder is within the profiles folder. It seems to me that you would set
the folder redirection back to the My Documents folder within the profile.
The problem is that it sounds circular.

Any thoughts? Thanks,

Chris

Generally if you are using roaming profiles, you wouldn't re-direct the
folders unless you want to have that data stored in a different location.
You won't use re-direction if you want to store it within their profiles,
since roaming profiles do this for you already.

Kendra,

Thanks for the reply. Actually, according to the Step-by-Step Guide to User
Data and User Settings, you should couple Roaming User Profiles with Folder
Redirection so that the entire profile is not downloaded every time the user
logs on. It just makes things faster.

Chris-

That's what I'm saying (although probably unclear, I'm still in holiday
mode). I thought you wanted to re-direct their My Docs back to the profile
that was already stored on the server, which as you point out is circular.
Unless you want to re-direct to another central location (another server
that houses all My Docs), then re-direction to the same profile location
would be pointless.

Thanks,
Kendra

Gotcha,

Okay, thanks for the reply. I'm in holiday mode too.
