I'm pretty sure this is a lost cause but a friend of mine says he made a
slideshow in Moviemaker and then burnt to either a CD or DVD. He then lost
these photos completely, he has searched his HD and they are gone. Is there
any way he can get them back from the CD?

You cannot retreive the original photos from the disc
because the content has been rendered into a video
format. However...what you can do is play the disc
and capture screen shots of each photo...these will
not equal the originals in resolution but will certainly
be better than nothing.

Here's some info on how to make screen captures
with several different apps:

1) The freeware VLC Media Player can play
your disc and has a Screen Capture option.

VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/

To setup for your screen captures...open VLC and
go to...Tools / Preferences / Video button / Video
Snapshots section.

In the directory field...Browse to and select a folder
to save your captures in. (for example...you could
create a new folder on your desktop and select it)

At...Prefix...check the box...Sequential numbering.

At...Format...choose JPEG or PNG.

Finally.....left click the 'Save' button.

Now...Play the video and pause by pressing your
Spacebar when you see a screen you wish to capture.

To capture the screen...type... Shift+S

Press spacebar to advance to the next photo...
ect...etc...

2) Windows Media Player:
You can do a screen capture from Windows Media Player.

Open Windows Media Player and go to...
Tools / Options / Performance tab / Advanced button...

Uncheck the box...'Use Overlays' / OK / Apply / Yes / OK...

Now...play the video and pause it on the screen you
wish to capture...now do your screen capture with Gadwin.

3) Windows Media Player Classic
For screen captures in Windows Media
Player Classic...try the following steps...

Open Windows Media Player Classic
and go to...View / Options / Playback /
Output...in the right pane...tick...System
Default / Apply / OK

Now play your movie clip and type...
Alt+I
to do the capture. You do not have to
pause but it makes it easier to get the
frame you want.
