task bar has disappeared. Any suggestions?

With that much detail, the best you can hope for is a lucky guess.
Here's my guess:

If you have Windows XP, go to Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu >
Taskbar tab > remove the check mark from 'Auto hide the taskbar'
