Resetting a user name

We are in the process of changing user name standards to
first initial last name. Is there an easy way to do this
other than change the user name login as the new name then
logout? Login as administrator and copy the profile
over. Is there a way on the desktop to re-associate the
user's login profile with the new login name quickly? Any
utilities etc?
