Hello,
I have a circle problem with my W2k SP4 (in French, I say: "je tourne en
rond")

I have now for a few days (I don't know why) a corrupted Windows Installer
on my Windows 2000 SP4.
The OS doesn't want to re-install the InstMsiW.exe (the last version of
Windows Installer) because he says the service is
already installed. I have removed the service with a toy of the
Developpement Kit fo Windows 2000 (srvinstw.exe). But he said again that the
service is
present, so no re-installation of InstMsiW.exe is possible. At last, I
re-install the
Service Pack 4 for W2k. No result.

How can I re-install Windows Installer and by-pass the fact that my OS says
"the service is already installed" ?

If i've removed the service with svrinstw.exe, why I'm not successful in
install InstMsiW.exe ?

I love the self-extractible Winzip: he doesn't need of Winzip to extract
itself but it seems not to be the same thing with msi .

Thank you for advance,
Please, you can also mail me directly your answer: (E-Mail Removed)

If you search MS help for msiexec regserver you'll see some articles like
this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324516
that list ways to re-register or re-install Windows Installer. It takes more
than just deleting the service to have Windows realize that MSI is no longer
installed.

Hello Phil,
The two ways of the kb324516 don't work. :-(
Now, I have, at least, restored with the toy srvinstw.exe the good "Windows
installer" service in the services list with the good parameters:
For Windows Installer service, I have the right path:
C:\WINNT\system32\msiexec.exe /V
and I have the good service on which "Windows installer" service depends:
RPC remote procedure call
I have verified: the RPC service is running.

But when I want to make the "windows Installer" service to run and not to
stay halted, I click the run button and I have this error message:
"impossible to run the "windows installer" service on the local computer;
error 5: acces denied ! (in French indeed, I translated!)

How can I unlock this access? I have the administrator rights (it's my
personnel computer). I clear up, also, that my computer is regularly Windows
updated. Is it possible that my problem came after applying a patch ?

Why this service depends on the RPC service ?

So, I don't know what to do now?
Is it possible to re-install Windows 2000 pro with the possibility to keep
all my previously installed programs if it is the last solution for me to
save time?
a lot of questions, I know, sorry
Thank you for advance.

It's not really very useful to concentrate on the Windows Installer service
because there's a lot more to MSI than just that service.

Usually msiexec.exe /unregserver deletes enough that instmsiw.exe will run
and re-install the service. The other steps ensure that Windows File
Protection doesn't restore the files. Reinstalling Windows 2000 will lose
your installed programs, even though the files will stay behind. That';s
because the registry, the start menuu etc etc are all initialized from
scratch *unless* you try the repair option of reinstalling Windows 2000.
When you re-install it will ask if you want a new install or a repair of an
existing one. You could try repair first - that will leave your installed
applications intact.

It's me again;
The situation is quite critical because I just achieve that I can't install
a security patch any more ! truly, I tried with the MS04-011 and it's
impossible to install the patch: denied access. (but I repeat: I am windows
updated; so, I "lost" my Windows installer service only for a few days and
after the MS04-014.
I also desactivated my antivirus program (PC-CILLIN) but the result is the
same. (I scanned all my drives for viruses: nothing).
help, please, :-(
