I have a folder containing 17 files:

01 Track.mp3
02 Track.mp3

up to

17 Track.mp3

I want to rename them and use the same procedure as in XP:

1. highlight all files
2. right-click the first file (01), select 'rename' and type in Track (01)
3. Sure enought, the files are renamed to Track (01), Track (2)....Track (17)

BUT

The original 01 Track.mp3 is not Track (01) in fact
05 Track 5.mp3 is now Track (01)
06 Track 6.mp3 is now Track (02) etc

and so-on, so the files are now out of order

This is unusable - is it just me or is anyone else finding this?

Hi,

I tried to reproduce the steps and it worked for me.
So I'm probably missing something

Are the file names in the form

01 Track.mp3
02 Track.mp3
03 Track.mp3
04 Track.mp3

or

01 Track 1.mp3
02 Track 2.mp3
03 Track 3.mp3
04 Track 4.mp3

?

And just to make sure I understand, the problem is output out of order -
like file 6 being renamed file 1, etc. Is that correct?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. In answer to your question the files were named

01 track.mp3

etc

I have just reproduced it with a different set of files.
I have reproduced with 12 files named

01-jerry_kilgore-whats_it_take_to_get_a_drink_in_here.mp3
up to
12-jerry_kilgore-lookin_for_a_highway.mp3

ie 12 (legally bought!) tracks

renaming these 12 at once to Track (01) ...Track (12) yes the renames are
out of order eg track (01) is now the original '12 jerry kilgore...' etc

Edit -> undo rename undoes the rename and the tracks are back in the correct
order

I have again repeated it with 6 files named
1.mp3
2.mp3
to
6.mp3

Using bulk rename to rename starting test (01).mp3 gives

file 1.mp3 -> test(2).mp3
file 2.mp3 -> test(3).mp3
file 3.mp3 -> test(4).mp3
file 4.mp3 -> test(5).mp3
file 5.mp3 -> test(6).mp3
file 6.mp3 -> test(01).mp3

Edit -> undo undoes the rename and the files are in correct order

Note: I don't think it is always 1 -> 2 etc yesterday file 6 was being
renamed Track (11) etc
