In Word 2002, I accidentally saved over a report I had written with a new
document, under the same name. I had opened up the original report in order
to use similar formatting, but forgot to save the new report under a new name
and saved over the original report. Is there ANY possible way to recover the
original report that was saved over???

In Word, if the "Always create backup copy" option is checked in Tools |
Options | Save, then the previous version of the document will be saved
with a .wbk filename extension in the same folder as the current version
of the document. If you don't have this option enabled, and if you
don't have a recent backup, then you're probably out of luck. You might
try one of the many available Windows file recovery utilities, although
they seldom work for me.

I've found several tmp files, some of which may belong to word, ie
~wrf2983.tmp, within a temp folder. Do these happen to be previous saves?
When I try to open them, all I get is jumbled code. Is there a way to view
the original text?
Thanks

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how Word
creates temporary files". Word is supposed to automatically delete the
..tmp files associated with a document when you close that document, so
the only .tmp files you usually find are related to documents that
crashed or that otherwise were not closed normally.

And if the document is still open, you can Undo back to the beginning of
your changes, resave as the original document, then Redo all the changes and
Save As.
