1) Is there a free app (or even shareware) than can really batch convert rm
movie files into divx avi? I have found a few but although they claim they
can batch convert you still have to add the files one by one into the
conversion list.

2) Is there a program like acdsee that can view thumbnails of real media
movie files in one pane and play them in another? Freeware or even shareware
will do. Or some kind of plugin that will enable programs like Xnview to see
them?

Thanks

try "oss video converter", it is not freeware but u can try
it for 30 days, this program does direct conversion without
using any filters like ffdshow that might be installed
