I mean the whole display... it's as if the monitor was on its side. Also, I don't think it's a monitor setting, because the pre-windows boot messages display correctly and it displays correctly if run in Safe Mode..

If that's the case you have a virus.

A virus is quite unlikely. The first response you got was correct. Many
video drivers have settings to rotate the image by 90 degrees at a time.
Sometimes, people accidentally hit the keyboard shortcut for this function.

The image displays correctly in Safe Mode because your computer is not using
your video card's driver - it's using the standard Windows VGA driver.

What make is the video card?

right click on desktop/click "Settings" tab/
click "Avanced button"

check properties for you video card, if you don't see a
fix their turn you monitor sideways.

as is always the case, the squirrel was right... the graphics driver did end up having a rotation option, and apparently there is a way to hot-key it 90 degrees at a time. Instead of turning the monitor on its side (which screws up the colors), I had moved the computer over to the couch so that I could lay on my side - much easier to fall asleep that way, though!

I sense the birth of a new product: the couch potato computer.

The squirrel is not always right, of course, but I've got something that may
just be right for you. It's this bridge...in Brooklyn...
